Alpacas...Are You Serious?
A No Nonsense Guide to Building Your Alpaca Business
Introduction
My intent is to present this information in an informal, conversational style. Imagine we are leaning on the front porch rail enjoying the view of the alpacas in the pastures below. They are either standing or cushed, chewing their cud or with heads in feeders, or just relaxed and hanging out in the pasture. Perhaps there is a cria pronking around with reckless abandon, or running flat out just because it feels good.
Let’s say you have arranged a ranch visit specifically to ask questions and learn more. You are beginning to get serious about this phenomenon known as the “Alpaca Lifestyle” or you have already purchased alpacas and are eager to learn more about building your alpaca business. I promise you I will address the in and outs, ups and downs, and myths vs. reality, in a straight up, no nonsense manner.
There is a population of alpaca owners whose alpaca business focuses on harvesting fiber from non-breeding males and females. Breeding and selling quality alpacas is an entirely different business operation and carries more inherent expenses, risks, and rewards. By the time you reach the end of this publication you will have a very clear idea of what is involved in creating a business dedicated to breeding and selling quality fiber production alpacas.
So, who am I and why am I qualified to address this subject? My name is Dianna Jordan and in 2005 my husband Jack and I established Alpacas of Somerset Farm in Somerset, CA. I am qualified because we experienced the transition from curiosity about, to total immersion in, alpacas as a business. Looking back, I wish we had a reference like this one to give us the big picture. Would that have changed our decision, probably not? Would we have done some things differently, most definitely?

This section provides a brief overview of the E-book. Until actual publication (targeted for the end of January 2010) it is a work in progress. Following is the introduction. Following the introduction is a list of topics, in no particular order, I think have value to new or prospective alpaca business owners.

The E-book will contain most, if not all, of the information in the web site presented in an easy to read book format. Additional topics (not in any particular order or priority):
